Eugene Foo and Honey Ahmad, the creators of Walinong Sari short animated film will take you through their pandemic animation project. This project harnessed the talents of industry professionals and students to produce a local princess story that is resolutely set in Nusantara artistic traditions.
Walinong Sari is a warrior princess of Inderapura who has to choose between a kingdom that comes with a strategic marriage or, to follow her heart for a life of adventure with a man who truly understands her.
Taking inspiration from Ninot Aziz’s retelling of the same legend in her book Lipur Lara Nusantara, Honey crafted a reimagining that brings the story into the 21st century. Partnering up with Eugene, we drew upon influences from Nanyang painters and wayang kulit movements to create a unique visual look that pays homage to animated works that we both love from the sang kancil shorts of Hassan Muthalib to the 2D hand-drawn worlds of Miyazaki.
